But what about the LimePasses?

Lime also offers passes in Paris that waive the unlock fee and reduce the per-minute rate, including a weekly commuter pass. These are genuinely better value than pay-as-you-go if you ride regularly, check the current options in the Lime app. But they remain per-trip pricing: the pass sits on top of what each ride costs. With Lime, riding more costs more. With Swapfiets, riding more costs nothing extra.

Convenience: the part that isn't in the price

  • Availability. Your Swapfiets is where you left it. A Lime is where someone else left it, sometimes a seven-minute walk away, on 12% battery.

  • Parking. The rules are tightening in Paris. Since 2022, only three free-floating bike operators have been permitted in the city, and bikes must be parked in designated zones. Your own bike goes on the rack downstairs.

  • Maintenance. Nobody services a Lime for you, but nobody services your own bought bike either. With Swapfiets, repairs are included and unlimited: if we can't fix it in 10 minutes, we swap it.

  • Theft. Bike theft in Paris is a real deterrent to ownership. With Swapfiets there's an excess, and we help you file the police report.

  • The Forfait Mobilités Durables. Every Swapfiets subscription qualifies: your employer can reimburse you up to €600 a year, tax-free. A Deluxe 7 costs roughly €203 a year, the allowance can cover the whole thing.

So which should you pick?

  • Choose Lime if you ride occasionally, unpredictably, one-way, or you're visiting.

  • Choose Swapfiets if you ride most weeks, want the same bike every time, and would rather pay one predictable amount.

Bike sharing vs bike subscription: FAQs

Bike sharing vs bike subscription: FAQs

What is Swapfiets?

Swapfiets is the world’s first ‘bicycle as a service’ company. Founded 2014 in the Netherlands, the scale-up quickly developed being one of the leading micro mobility providers in Europe with 270.000 members in the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Denmark, France, Spain, Austria and UK.

The concept of Swapfiets is quite simple: For a monthly subscription fee, Swapfiets members receive a fully functional bicycle or e-mobility solution for their own use. If needed, a repair service is available within 48 hours to repair or directly swap the two-wheeler at no additional cost.

How much does a Lime bike cost in Paris?

Lime charges an unlock fee plus a per-minute rate. Its London per-minute rate rose to 31p, and a 20-minute pay-as-you-go ride now costs £6.20. LimePrime, at £6.99 a month, brings that down to a flat £1.70 for rides of up to 20 minutes. Rates vary by city and demand.

When does Swapfiets become cheaper than Lime?

Against pay-as-you-go, almost immediately, a couple of riding days a month. Against LimePrime, the crossover comes later but still well inside a normal commuting pattern. If you cycle to work five days a week, the subscription wins comfortably.

Is Lime cheaper for short trips?

Yes, and that's what it's designed for. For a one-off ride across town, Lime will nearly always cost less than a month's subscription. The comparison only turns when riding becomes a habit.

What happens when I'm done with my membership?

To cancel your membership simply follow the instructions and steps in the Swapfiets app. All of our memberships include a one-month notice period. If you’re on a loyal membership, you can cancel after 6 months. Once you bring back the bike we'll give it a quick tune-up and send it on its way to serve another member.
